Link in popup opens the popup contents in a new tab

I've got an email with a non-standard link that looks like this:
<a href="#" style="color:#999999" target="_blank">...</a>

When I click on the link from Gmail, nothing happens, but when I click on it from the popup, the popup is being opened in a new tab with the URL:
chrome-extension://oeopbcgkkoapgobdbedcemjljbihmemj/popup.html?source=toolbar

That's not too bad, but it might cause a security issue if an attacker can navigate to any chrome-extension page.
